Free speech interlude, ctd.



We killed them? Or, some killed them? If a society had exactly one person who wished abortion were illegal, would that person be part of a 'we' that's responsible for the killing?

The video closes with "we have faith in our sovereign God"—great, but don't many not have the particular faith that leads some to think fertilized eggs are people with eternal souls? What of them? Why should one faith trump others?

    If you look at this conflict politically, it becomes clearer. Is destroying a fertilized egg infringing on that persons rights? You see, those zygotes could be considered human beings, if so, their rights should be protected- whether or not they are able to defend them.

    Zygotes are undoubtedly human beings, the issue is whether they are yet persons. Most people don't think so unless they have some faith that holds sex to be sacred. And even if most did have such a faith, as long as a significant minority does not it's wrong to base public policy on that faith.

    Now if you move from zygotes to sufficiently-developed fetuses, then percentage of people consider them to be persons grows—hence Roe's crude trimester approach.
