"In Yemen, fathers sometimes trade their daughters in order to take new wives"
Two thousand years ago in the Mideast, many Jews and Gentiles had similar arranged marriages. Yet in the Western World, somehow marriage was "redefined" from that Abrahamic tradition to involve willing -- and thus in most cases, loving -- participants. Somehow I think we're better for it, despite the horrors of "redefining a five thousand year-old" institution. Nowdays, most of the time you don't even have to work 7 years for each partner. Also we've gone and outlawed polygamy, and you shouldn't have children with your partners' servants (2 of the twelve tribes of Israel -- Dan and Naphtali -- were born of Rachel's servant Bilhah, and another 2 -- Gad and Nasher -- were born of Leah's servant Zilhah).
But these days you can only have one husband or wife at a time and aren't supposed to fuck their servants. It's true!
Oh the horrors of "redefinition"...
