i wonder if that ultimately begs the question of what size of government would be optimal, taking the long view. if universal health care has been a necessary inevitability, wasn't it stupid of us to put off the painful decision until the time that our health care system was about to hit the rocks and per-patient spending had skyrocketed? if we did it 20-30 years ago, the pain might not have been as acute.
