I don't think anyone's hand should be twisted into getting married, or that any unmarried couples are inherently inferior to married ones.
But I liked the gist of Ross's argument here: In the aggregate, public commitments are stronger than private ones, even though exceptional people may be unaffected by the public.
...which of course is why I'm outraged that same-sex couples are not allowed to make the same public commitment. They and their communities stand to benefit in the same way.
