If you look at this conflict politically, it becomes clearer. Is destroying a fertilized egg infringing on that persons rights? You see, those zygotes could be considered human beings, if so, their rights should be protected- whether or not they are able to defend them.
ReplyDeleteZygotes are undoubtedly human beings, the issue is whether they are yet persons. Most people don't think so unless they have some faith that holds sex to be sacred. And even if most did have such a faith, as long as a significant minority does not it's wrong to base public policy on that faith.
ReplyDeleteNow if you move from zygotes to sufficiently-developed fetuses, then percentage of people consider them to be persons grows—hence Roe's crude trimester approach.
