Iranian cleric blames quake on promiscuous women

BBC:
Women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes, an Iranian cleric says.

Hojjat ol-eslam Kazem Sediqi, the acting Friday prayer leader in Tehran, said women should stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves.

"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he explained.

Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade.

Mr Sediqi was delivering a televised sermon at the Tehran University campus mosque last Friday on the need for a "general repentance" by Iranians when he warned of a "prevalence of degeneracy".

"What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," he said.

Correspondents say many young Iranians sometimes push the boundaries of how they can dress, showing hair under their headscarves or wearing tight-fitting clothes.
Remind me again how religion is a force for good in the world.

  1. Islam is pure evil.

    Religion fails on its face.

Following Christ is, and always has been a monumental force for good like no other.

  2. Since when did "following Christ" stop being a religion? Must the English language make special exception for your beliefs and practices?

Christianity and Islam differ in degree, not in kind.

  3. re·li·gion

    –noun
    1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

A religion is works. 'Practicing your religion' just enough to make it to a certain goal.

Following Christ is about a relationship with your creator, in which you your sole purpose is to love.

Following Christ and Islam differ completely in kind and degree.

  4. So following Christ does not involve a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe. And following Christ does not involve superhuman agency or agencies, devotional and ritual observances, nor a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

    Right.

And it's not like you've been brainwashed at weekly services into maintaining the cognitive dissonance that pretends your religion is special and unlike other competing religions such as Islam, because only yours is One True Way(tm).

    Right.

  5. There's no question people have done terrible things in the name of Christianity, but that's not the question. The fact is, following the example of Christ has been an enormous force for good.

Religion has given us nothing but pain. Following Christ has produced Mother Teressa, The Salvation Army, The Red Cross, Compassion International, thousands of Catholic hospitals and healthcare organizations, etc. etc.

  6. Mother Theresa, "Jesus has a very special love for you. As for me, the silence and the emptiness is so great that I look and do not see, listen and do not hear", that Mother Theresa?

She was a cultural Christian, as am I. We have no problem participating with TSA, TRC, and similar charities. If that's all it takes to be a "follower of Christ", count me in. There need be no "relationship" or belief in anything supernatural here.

Now if you have a "relationship" with Christ, then you are very probably a "Christian". Which is to say, someone one who has the set of beliefs corresponding to the religion known as Christianity, using the definition you provided.
